Austin Hazardous Waste Drop Off: What You Can Bring

What Austin's hazardous waste drop-off accepts, how to pack it, and who can use the center for free.

Austin hazardous waste drop off: what the center takes

Austin hazardous waste drop off is handled at the Recycle and Reuse Center, by appointment. The city list includes paint and thinners, cleaning products, pesticides, pool chemicals, aerosol cans, automotive fluids and oil filters, cooking oil, fluorescent bulbs, mercury items, household and car batteries, and propane cylinders.

It does not take business waste, explosives or ammunition, radioactive material, or syringes and other medical waste. A business that needs a path for chemicals should call 512-974-4335, not use the resident line.

Austin hazardous waste drop off is free for Austin and Travis County residents. Others pay a fee. Tires are the exception even for residents: the city posts a fee of $6 per tire. You can also pick up free reused paint and some cleaning supplies at the same center when they have stock.

Austin hazardous waste drop off packing rules

Keep products in the original container. Do not mix chemicals. Use containers of five gallons or less. Stand small containers upright in a sturdy box. If something leaks, set it in another container and soak the spill with cat litter. Do not bring a trash bag of loose bottles. Staff need to see the labels.

City rules allow residents to bring up to 30 gallons of home-generated liquid hazardous waste in those small containers at no extra charge. More than that can be billed at cost.

Curbside customers who cannot drive can book a home collection. See Austin paint recycling and Austin battery recycling for those two common loads. Book the visit on the Recycle and Reuse Center page or through the Austin recycle and reuse center guide.
